LOCATION

Câmara de Lobos, located on the south coast of the island of Madeira, was the first town inhabited by João Gonçalves Zarco, the navigator who discovered this "pearl of the Atlantic". Having stayed there between 1420 and 1424, this was the first settlement created in Madeira, elevated to a parish in 1430. Its historical legacy is therefore very important.

The name of this municipality comes from the fact that, at the time of the discovery of the island, there were a large number of sea lions in the cove that can still be found here today in the same configuration. In this region, there are several monuments dating back to that historical period, from the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, founded in the 15th century, to the old convent of São Bernardino, dating from 1425, including the church of São Sebastião, built in the 16th century.

The municipality of Câmara de Lobos currently has an area of 51.82 km² and around 35,000 inhabitants. In addition to the parish of Câmara de Lobos, the municipality is made up of four parishes: Curral das Freiras, Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, Jardim da Serra and Quinta Grande.

The town's landscape is marked by the presence of the characteristic fishing boats called "Xavelhas". Come and visit Câmara de Lobos!
